My Community and Me is a 10-week digital production workshop, where youth will be motivated to express their innate creativity through documentary art production. Participants will develop 4-minute short films based on the question “What’s a major social issue for youth in my community today?”Working in groups, participants will work collaboratively to make artistic works about social issues affecting their peers in the community. Focusing on unconventional structures of storytelling and filming techniques, participants will be able to incorporate other media, including photography, drawing, spoken word poetry and animation in their films.

About the Artist:

Monica Mak is both a documentary filmmaker and media studies educator based in Toronto. Monica has directed/co-directed, filmed and edited videos for diverse organizations, including humanitarian aid agencies and university-based research centers. In her body of video work, she has tackled a plethora of subjects; these include peace education in post-conflict regions and Montreal classrooms, gender-based violence in post-Apartheid South Africa, and female empowerment through sports. Also a media studies educator, Monica has given media literacy and video production workshops to pre-college youth in Canada and South Africa. Her most recent work is Saving our Tongues, a 14-minute documentary, which she co-directs with Anastasia Riehl, founder of Endangered Language Alliance Toronto. The film focuses on immigrant speakers of languages under threat of global extinction. Monica’s latest work-in-progress, The Hair Scarf Project, is a mixed media project that combines documentary, photography and textile-based art.
